Who can take out Student Cover?

To be eligible for Student Cover you must be:

  • a full time student

  • on a course of at least one year’s duration

If your circumstances don’t meet these criteria, call our Helpline on FREEPHONE 0800 7837187 for advice

Is SIS Direct the cheapest?

This depends on where you live and the type of cover required

As with motor and household insurance, different insurers have their own ideas on the premiums which should be charged. With student possessions insurance, there is currently not enough choice, something which SIS Direct is helping to change

We’re not trying to tell you that we’re the only student possessions insurer, or that you must insure with us. We’re here to offer choice, and to recommend that you consider our cover and premiums before making your final choice. You could save yourself a lot of money!

[Back]

How do I arrange cover?

Simply

  • click on to the Quote option

  • enter the postcode of your University address

  • confirm whether you live in a Hall of Residence or not>

  • choose the cover levels you require under the different cover Sections

When, having looked at all possible cover alternatives, you’ve found a level of cover and premium which suits your needs, complete the details on screen, enter your Credit, Delta or Switch Card details and complete the transaction

You’re on cover immediately

[Back]

What cover do I need?

You must arrange cover under the Contents Section – cover under other Sections is optional

When choosing your Contents sum insured, you should

  • only insure the value of possessions kept in your University accommodation

  • insure your possessions for their full value – under-insurance can seriously affect your financial position in the event of a claim

  • remember there is no cover for computers or pedal cycles under the Contents Section – if you need cover for these items, then it must be arranged under the Computer and Pedal Cycle Sections

[Back]

How secure are my credit card details?

Have you ever handed your Credit Card to a shop assistant? Your details are equally secure when you enter them onto the SIS Direct Quote screen. We do not store or retain your Card details on the Internet, and they are not accessible to any other party

If you have any doubts, finalise your quotation on screen and then telephone us on FREEPHONE 0800 7837187 and we’ll process your payment for you

But you really don’t need our assistance, and you could have difficulty in getting through to us at busy times and outside of office hours. Do it yourself – with confidence!

[Back]

Do I need to fill in a proposal form?

No – you only need fill in the details on the quote screen.

When all the necessary information has been provided, including your chosen method of payment, you will then be able to arrange cover yourself

[Back]

Can my parents arrange cover for me?

Yes

Providing you have agreed the type and level of cover required, your parents can arrange cover for you, and pay with their own Credit, Delta or Switch card

[Back]

How can the premium be paid?

By Credit, Delta or Switch only

We cannot accept cheques or cash

[Back]

Does there have to be forcible entry into my room for theft cover to apply?

No – only in respect of Money.

[Back]

Can I change my mind after arranging cover and have my premium refunded?

We provide a 10 day Money Back Guarantee

If having received and read your Schedule and the Student Cover Insurance document, you are not satisfied with the cover you have arranged, you are entitled to a full refund of your premium providing that:

  • the documents are returned to SIS Direct within 10 days
  • no incident which may give rise to a claim has occurred

[Back]

When does my cover start?

  • the moment you click on to the “Purchase Now” option and your payment method is accepted

or

  • from your chosen “Cover Required From” date, if later

[Back]

Who are the Insurers?

Certain Underwriters at Lloyds of London

[Back]

Who deals with claims?

Advent Insurance Services Limited will deal with practically all claims on your behalf, although an independent loss adjuster may be asked to assist with larger claims, and certain types of claim may be dealt with by the Underwriters

Claim payments will be made by Advent Insurance Services Limited on the Insurers behalf, and contact addresses and telephone numbers appear in the Student Cover Insurance document

[Back]

What is meant by a Designated Hall of Residence?

In its simplest form, a Hall of Residence is owned by a University or college and called as such by name

Sometimes, however, student residences may be acceptable for Hall of Residence premium rates, but are privately owned. Typically, they house 50 or more students, have one common entrance and have porters taking care of security. If you are uncertain as to whether you qualify for Hall of Residence premiums, please call us for advice on FREEPHONE 0800 7837187

[Back]

Are there any premium discounts available?

If your Term Time Address has a functioning burglar alarm (not a dummy box ) which is left operative whenever the premises are unoccupied, click the burglar alarm option for a premium discount

[Back]

What happens if I claim a discount to which I am not entitled?

There is no reason to claim a discount to which you’re not entitled, so please don’t!

If you made a claim and were found to have claimed a discount to which you were not entitled, your financial position could be affected

[Back]

Is the cover new-for-old?

Yes – for most items

The basis of settlement is normally the full cost of replacing an item with its nearest equivalent, unless it can be repaired.

New-for-old does not apply to clothing, household linen, pedal cycles, rented household goods and University property on loan to you

[Back]

What are the principal cover limitations and exclusions?

The Principal Cover Limitations are

  • Hi-Fi equipment - £750

  • Photographic equipment, video cameras and camcorders - £500

  • Jewellery watches and other valuables - £500

  • Audio and video cassettes CDs records and cartridges - £500

The Principal Cover Exclusions are

  • The first £25 of any claim

  • Computer Equipment unless insured under the Computer Section

  • Pedal Cycles unless insured under the Pedal Cycle Section

  • Contact lenses

  • Mobile phones

  • Theft from private motor vehicles

  • Any loss by theft in excess of £500 from your term time address during vacations when it is unoccupied

[Back]

Does cover apply outside of the United Kingdom?

No

The territorial limits of cover, including losses at your parents home and under the All Risks section, are England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Isle of man and the Channel Islands

[Back]

Does cover apply during vacations?

If you live in a Hall of Residence, cover under all Sections applies in your room during vacations

If you live in other Term Time accommodation, cover applies during vacations when the premises are occupied by you or someone who shares the accommodation with you.

When your Term Time address is unoccupied, cover is limited to a maximum of £500 under the Contents Section, and there is no cover for items insured under other Sections

[Back]

Am I covered when travelling to and from University?

Not under the Contents Section – but cover does apply to items insured under other Sections, except for losses from private motor vehicles, which cannot be covered

[Back]

Am I covered for theft from a private motor vehicle?

No

If you travel to or from University in a private motor vehicle, it is in your best interests to travel undiverted by shopping stops or similar. Even if you have arranged insurance under the Computer Section, there would be no cover if, for example, your computer was stolen from your parents car in an NCP Car Park

[Back]

Are there any restrictions on theft cover?

Whether you live in Hall of Residence or rented accommodation, there is no requirement for special locks on your door nor any requirement for theft to result from a forced entry causing damage, except for theft of money

This means that if a thief picks the lock on your door, slips the lock on the main door or the catch on a window, or even uses a duplicate key, theft cover will nearly always apply

The only exceptions are that there must be forcible and violent entry for cover

  • to apply to Money in your room (covered up to £50)

  • in temporary accommodation such as a hotel or when staying with friends

  • in excess of £200 in bathroom or utility areas if you live in Hall of Residence

[Back]

Is the first part of any claim not payable (an excess)?

Yes – the first £25 of any claim is not payable

[Back]

Can I insure my computer?

Yes, but not under the Contents Section

We have a special Section for insuring computers and their accessories, including software, games and games consoles – and cover includes accidental loss or damage anywhere in the United Kingdom.

You cannot arrange cover for your computer on it’s own. You must have cover under the Contents as well.

Please note that cover does not apply to any theft from a private motor vehicle

[Back]

Can I insure my mobile phone?

No – the premium would be so high, we’d be embarrassed to quote it

The best insurance for your mobile is self-insurance – in other words, take care of it and if you do lose it, notify your supplier immediately to avoid liability for the thief’s all night phone calls at your expense!

[Back]

Is my CD collection covered?

Under the Contents Section, the maximum cover is £300 for audio and video cassettes CDs records and cartridges

You can top up your cover for CDs by arranging insurance under the All Risks Section, but please note the following

CDs are highly attractive to thieves because they are so easy to dispose of. Don’t keep a larger CD collection in your Term Time address than necessary – leave the bulk in your parents’ address where it will be covered by their insurance. Remember, a loss of 200 CDs is a loss of £2,000-£3,000!

[Back]

Am I covered for rented goods such as a television or VCR?

Yes – providing they are rented in your name

If you share the cost of rented goods, but they are hired by someone you share with, that person should arrange insurance for the items concerned. They would be liable for the entire value in the event of loss. Incidentally, the reason rented goods are not covered on a new-for-old basis is that the company would only invoice the hirer for their “written down value”. If, for example, they were stolen, the insurance company would pay the amount for which the hirer was liable

[Back]

How does cover under the different Sections work?

Click onto the words of the cover Sections in the Quotation and details will appear in a window. For example, if you want a summary of the All Risks cover, click on the words “All Risks” which are coloured green on the quote page where you choose your sums insured, and a description of cover will appear

[Back]

What must I do if I need to change my cover?

Telephone SIS Direct on FREEPHONE 0800 7837187 or write to us at the address shown in your Student Cover Insurance document.

[Back]
